1) Company Structure
The company that I’m going to be talking about
is RockStar Games. They produce games for a variety of consoles including PC,
PlayStation and Xbox. Their most notable games include the Grand Theft Auto
series, Max Payne and Red Dead. Their games are aimed at the adult market
however teenagers are still fascinated by them and can acquire the games, even
though they are under age. RockStar employ around 900 people across 8 studios.
The publisher of their games is the company itself, RockStar Games, and the owners,
Take-Two Interactive, distribute them. The owners come next in the table as
they have the ability to control who is employed for which job. The senior
management team is in the same box as the owners as they can feedback all that
is happening in terms of production, design and more, they can request to talk
to the owners at anytime.
2) Platform Technology
Rockstar Games produce their games using their own engine for the PlayStation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Windows, Mac and Wii. They manage to get games prepared for release by promoting them heavily on TV, social media, magazines, websites, wherever there is a market for their game to be publicised. In the case of Rockstar, they will spend vast amounts of money advertising the game, as they have spent lots of money on making the game in the first place. They adapt their products for the current markets and trends by releasing their console games mainly only for the next gen consoles (the PS4 and the Xbox One). Rockstar have also released their games onto the app store in the past, making sure that they're keeping with the current trend of mobile technology.
3) Game Types
From the games that they produce, Rockstar is defined as a action-adventure game producer. With games like GTA V (which is also an open world game), LA Noire and Max Payne 3 being just some of the games that fall into this category. However, Rockstar do produce games for other genres such as the table tennis game for the Nintendo Wii, which comes under the sports category. Rockstar have collaborated with other game development companies in the past, for example they worked with the Australian based company Team Bondi to produce LA Noire. They worked with the third party developer by funding the development of the game and having a say in what could be done to improve it.
4) Games On Multi Platforms
Rockstar create their games for a variety of platforms. More recently, the next generation consoles (PS4 and Xbox One) have become the latest technology to have in terms of gaming. Rockstar can adapt games for different platforms from an existing IP. They can use this IP in the game development and change the features to make the game suitable for that platform. An example of this is making GTA V avilable on Steam rather than just console.
5) Regulatory Bodies
The regulatory body that Rockstar has to comply with is PEGI. PEGI rate games based on a number of things such as violence, explicit language and sexual content. As Rockstar's action/adventure game usually contain a lot of these things, PEGI decide to rate them as a 16 or an 18, meaning that nobody under the age of 16 or 18 can legally buy the game. This doesn't have an impact on the sale of the game, as the target audience that Rockstar are selling their action/adventure games too are people who are 16+.
6) Developmental Software
To create their current games like GTA V, Rockstar used their own game engine, 'RAGE' (Rockstar Advanced Game Engine). This game engine was created in 2006 at the Rockstar San Diego studio. So far, eight games have been made by Rockstar by using this engine.
